Our conference, "Communism for Young People: Passing on the Recent Past in Central and Eastern Europe," held at the „Nicolae Iorga” Institute of History on May 28-29, brought together scholars, students, and educators to explore why the recent past matters and how its lessons can be shared with younger generations.
Over two inspiring days, more than 50 researchers from Romania, the Republic of Moldova, Georgia, the United States, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Austria, Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, Lithuania, and Estonia presented their work. They were joined by researchers and students from across the region, including Hungary, creating a truly international and vibrant exchange of ideas.
The presentations were stimulating, the discussions intense and productive, and the interaction among participants was of a high academic standard while remaining friendly and open to dialogue. There were two days filled with a passion for history, freedom, critical thinking, and tolerance.
Special mention should be made of the students from Poland, who participated actively in the conference proceedings, even though many of them were attending such an event for the first time.
